Spring Fling 2013

Filed under: Knitting — soozeinthecity @ 5:27 pm

On my way to Colorado for the Loopy Ewe Spring Fling. Hubby calls it a “yarn convention” but a better description would be “knitting retreat”. I’m taking 3 classes and will see some of the friends I made when I attended this event in 2009.

I left ample time for travel & security checks – I got x-rayed- I am sitting here for the next hour even before boarding starts. Yep, me, my knitting and my $5 bottle of water. This is the $2.99 bottle everywhere else but at the airport.

A Big Break for Knitty City

My favorite local yarn store, Knitty City, is a finalist in the Big Break for Small Business contest sponsored by American Express OPEN. There 10 finalists vying for five $25,000 prizes.

Two years ago I made a proposal to the store’s owner to work on some projects for the store. After 3 months Pearl added me to the store’s staff & I’ve been working there since. Knitty City is exactly what it says it is – a community for fiber lovers. The customers feel at home here, they love creating things with yarn and they love meeting others who do the same.

What would Knitty City do to with the prize money? We have taught basic knitting in Bryant Park for the past two summers – we want to expand that to a year round program. And like many small businesses we want some guidance on how to maximize out social media opportunities. This would be provided by a strategy session led by American Express and Facebook.

The five winners will be selected through public voting on Facebook that begins on Monday, August 20th at 9 am. Voting will continue for 12 days, ending at 11:59 PM, August 31, 2012.

To find out more about this competition and to vote, go to VOTE . Please note that apparently voting from mobile devices is discourage (?!?!). Desktops & laptops seem to be ok.

Hello Portland!

I had the good fortune to participate in several unique events last year but sadly I didn’t have this blog up and running in 2011. To make up for that I will have a series of “a look back” posts as these events happen again this year.

This first will be about Sock Summit 2011 – It’s been a year since I attended that wonderful event. I’ll say this much now: I fell in love with Portland, Oregon as the plane was making its descent.

For a city kid to see gorgeous green trees near the airport was an giddy treat!

A sample of Loreley

I’d been chatting with Ivete Tecedor, the owner of and she needed to get another sample made of her Loreley Scarf. I offered to make the sample by knitting during my subway commute.

Loreley is available as a kit that includes 8 colors of Koigu KPPPM yarn and the pattern (size 6 needles not included). This sample is brighter & more colorful than the original sample which I believe resides at Knitty City. That scarf is made up of dark colors and has been wildly popular with the customers.

The scarf is a quick and easy knit if you know the following techniques: knit 2 together, yarn over and alternating 2 colors. Koigu is fantastic to work with – colors that seem to be thrown together on the skein look totally fabulous once knitted up. Ivete puts together great color combinations – it’s her favorite yarn and she has a long history with it.

So now that’s done I’m back to the drawing board. I’m in the middle of revising my own design for Baah yarns 🙂

Starting a Stripe Study

Filed under: Knitting — soozeinthecity @ 1:36 am

I’m knitting Veera Valimaki’s Stripe Study and I’m at the point where I switch colors & work some short rows. I’m using Alisha Goes Around Tracks of Bison fingering weight yarn in Eggplanty (Purple) & Bedroom (Violet).
